Fox Sports

The FOX Big Noon Kickoff heads to Ames, Iowa, this weekend for one of the Midwest’s most underrated rivalries: “Farmageddon,” better known as the annual clash between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones. While it doesn’t always carry national playoff implications, this match-up routinely delivers drama, intensity, and betting intrigue.

A hated rivalry renewed for Iowa-Iowa State

Quarterback Rocco Becht may the difference

Oddsmakers have listed Iowa State as a 3-point home favorite, but this line has already sparked plenty of debate. On paper, the Cyclones return key pieces, most notably quarterback Rocco Becht, the Tampa, FL, product and son of longtime NFL tight end Anthony Becht. Rocco showed poise as a freshman last season, engineering a memorable late drive in Iowa City to secure a road win for the Cyclones. With another year of experience under his belt and home-field advantage, there’s understandable momentum on the Iowa State side.

Yet, Iowa remains a live underdog. The Hawkeyes struggled in stretches against Albany early in the game last Saturday, but that might be misleading. This program has built its identity on defense and field position football, thriving in low-scoring, grind-it-out contests. And, in rivalry games like this, that blueprint often travels well. Historically, the “Cy-Hawk rivalry” rarely produces blowouts—eight of the last ten meetings have been decided by one possession, with defensive stops and special teams playing outsized roles.

From a gambling perspective, Iowa catching a field goal is appealing. The Hawkeyes are used to being in tight, low-margin games, and head coach Kirk Ferentz has thrived in the underdog role. Bettors backing Iowa are essentially wagering that the defense can neutralize Becht and force Iowa State into mistakes. On the other side, Cyclone backers will argue that Becht’s growth and a more balanced offense will finally tip the scales away from Iowa’s defensive stranglehold.

Annual Concern for Iowa’s lack of offense

For years, Iowa has been defined by stout defense and offensive struggles, particularly at quarterback. The Hawkeyes’ inability to consistently score has overshadowed their otherwise disciplined style of play. That could change this season with the addition of Mark Granowski, a transfer quarterback from South Dakota State who had an impressive career at the FCS level. While Iowa played conservatively in its opener against Albany, likely to conceal what Granowski can bring, his arm talent and poise give this offense a chance to finally find balance. With leading tackler LB Nick Jackson moving on to the NFL, the defense will still be expected to hold its own, anchored by proven leaders, but the real storyline in Iowa City is whether Granowski can elevate the offense enough to make the Hawkeyes a legitimate sleeper in the Big Ten.

Looking ahead, the schedule presents opportunity. Iowa avoids Penn State and will host both Ohio State and Oregon later in the season—two heavyweight match-ups that could define their campaign. Pairing Granowski’s potential with the usual tough defense, Iowa has the ingredients to pull off surprise wins starting here. In the rivalry against Iowa State, history has shown the unpredictability of this match-up with bizarre plays, special-teams swings, and defensive scores often shaping outcomes. That makes this year’s Cy-Hawk showdown another toss-up, one likely to be low-scoring and decided by a handful of key moments.

Don’t be surprised if this is a 21–20 type of game, and  Iowa looks capable of not only keeping it close but possibly winning outright in Ames.

Expect another tense, physical Cy-Hawk showdown, where every possession matters.
