Oregon-Texas Tech is the second of four CFP quarterfinal games. It is the first installment of the New Year’s Day playoff tripleheader as 2026 begins with a bang. Oregon made the quarterfinals last season and was a 13-0 team seeded first in the 12-team playoff field. The Ducks got hammered by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and bowed out early. This Oregon team isn’t as good as last season’s UO team, but this Duck team isn’t playing Ohio State. Texas Tech is a less prominent opponent, but one which has earned its way to the quarterfinal stage with the efforts of elite linebackers such as Jacob Rodriguez and a roster which is comprised of a lot of high-end additions from the transfer portal. Few college football programs did more to develop their roster through the portal and an NIL pipeline than Texas Tech did. General manager James Blanchard helped coach Joey McGuire assemble a roster of winning players which has instantly catapulted the Red Raiders into the center of the national conversation.

The College Football Playoff has the blue-blood programs playing later on New Year’s Day, with Alabama in the Rose Bowl against Indiana and Georgia playing Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl, but this Orange Bowl game — first on the docket in 2026 — might be the best game of them all, in part because these teams are mysteries to each other and to much of the nation. We will explain this point in greater depth and detail below:

Oregon-Texas Tech is the best CFP quarterfinal matchup on paper

Texas Tech has a lot to prove against a more established national program

Oregon-Texas Tech is so interesting because this matchup is new and different. It isn’t Oregon-Ohio State in a Big Ten game (last season). It isn’t a matchup of teams we always see at this time of year. Texas Tech doesn’t have big wins outside the Big 12, and Oregon did not grab especially big wins within the Big Ten, losing to Indiana and not playing Ohio State. Just how good are these teams? We don’t know. That’s what makes this such an intriguing game to evaluate. We didn’t really learn a whole lot from Oregon easily cruising past James Madison at home in the first round. Oregon didn’t cover the 20.5-point spread, but it did lead the game by 35 points before putting in backups in garbage time. That game was very, very easy for Oregon. Texas Tech is a completely different opponent in a completely different situation. Tech is meeting Oregon not in Eugene on the Ducks’ home field, but in Miami Gardens at the Orange Bowl for a game which starts just after 11 a.m. Lubbock time and just after 9 a.m. Pacific time. How are these teams going to react in a game which will confer a lot of credibility on the winner and a lot of doubt on the loser? It’s such an open question.

Texas Tech crushed BYU twice this season. BYU looked ordinary — not terrible, not great — in its narrow bowl win over Georgia Tech of the ACC. If you were trying to get clues or hints on Texas Tech from that BYU game, you likely came away with a mixed verdict. The more one thinks about this game, the harder it is to predict. The featured matchup is Oregon quarterback Dante Moore against Jacob Rodriguez and that Texas Tech defense. These teams and players are unfamiliar to each other. They are both playing far away from home in an early time slot. Everything about this game screams “coin flip,” and that’s simply not a situation tailor-made for strong, authoritative betting picks or recommendations. Wait for a live play in this one after you have seen at least 10 minutes if not more.
