One of the most intriguing matchups of the weekend takes place in Eugene, Oregon, where Oklahoma State visits the Ducks in odd national CBS broadcast. While traditional SEC powers like Alabama-Tennessee or Florida-LSU used to dominate the CBS airwaves, this Big 12–Pac-12 crossover is drawing plenty of attention.

Oklahoma State battles Oregon in an odd matchup

Lots of Changes for OK State

Oklahoma State comes into the game off a shaky 27–7 win over UT Martin, where the Cowboys struggled to find rhythm before pulling away late. The offseason was tumultuous in Stillwater, as longtime head coach Mike Gundy overhauled his entire staff—replacing offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinators in one sweeping reset. The challenge now becomes finding continuity on the road against an Oregon team that opened its season by lighting up Montana State for a lopsided win. Oddsmakers have installed the Ducks as heavy favorites, nearly a 30-point spread, reflecting the gap in perceived firepower.

But, there are numbers that suggest Oklahoma State could be a tougher out than expected. In their last 13 tries on the road against ranked opponents, Gundy’s Cowboys are an impressive 9–4 against the spread. Even more telling, Oklahoma State has won and covered in its last eight season-opening road games, a streak that speaks to Gundy’s knack for preparation despite roster turnover. If the Cowboys can generate just enough offense—somewhere in the 20–24 point range—they could easily keep this game within striking distance, even if Oregon’s explosive attack pushes into the 40s or 50s later in the game.

Mike Gundy and Dan Lanning Have Barbs

Adding intrigue is the off-field tension between the two programs. Gundy made headlines this week by voicing frustrations about NIL disparities, pointing out Oregon’s advantages with Nike co-founder Phil Knight backing the Ducks to the tune of over $40 million for their program compared to Oklahoma State’s now-past support from oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning wasted little time firing back, reminding Gundy that the Cowboys had plenty of success long before NIL officially became part of the equation. That back-and-forth has only added spice to an already fascinating non-conference matchup.

Ultimately, the scoreboard will tell the story. Oregon is built to overwhelm opponents at home as their 59-13 blowout of Montana State showed last week, but Oklahoma State’s history as a feisty underdog should not be ignored. Whether the Cowboys can hang around long enough to make CBS viewers sweat the spread remains the biggest question heading into Saturday afternoon.
